What can be better than CA Hwy 36 ??

Well it turns out that one of the best things about CA Hwy 36 is that you will drive past the junction of South Fork Mountain Rd. A single sign identifies this junction and leads onto one of the best narrow ribbons of tarmac in Northern CA.

About 50 miles long, the road joins to Hwy 299 in the North and crosses through state forest and private lands as it winds along this one of many north/south ridgelines. At almost 6000 ft elevation, the view to either side is spectacular and when the horizon nears and the vegetation closes in, the forest, topography and geology vie for your attention.

There were various camps along the road, but seeing a 400lb brown Bear loping across the road indicates that you may be sharing your camp with an apex predator.
